John Bicknell is a painter whose work in the past thirty years has crossed between abstraction , figuration, film, the voice and performance. His work during the eighties and nineties centred on an exploration of abstraction and landscape. More recent work has developed a figurative narrative drawn from wide ranging sources and influences including film, theatre, the history of painting, and photographs of conflict.
The images are melancholic and humorous, representing human folly, which express the paradox of beauty and brutality in life and death.  He has worked in collaboration with other artists, film-makers and actors.
John Bicknell lives and works in Athens, Greece. Recent solo exhibitions include  The burning ship and the dead poet, Lefas Municipal Gallery Athens  2018. Defiance and Tolerance , Fokia Nou Athens 2017. Recent Group exhibitions include Kypselian Salon , Snetha Residency Athens  2021. Fokia Nou goes to Stockholme Supermarket  Stockholme international Art Fair 2019. Never below Zero, Snetha Residency 2018.
